yao wei's 19
Our new year boy -yao wei, has finally turn 19 (though behaving like a 8 year old) on the first of January.  Being born on the first day of the year is something to be proud of,  its like you are the first baby among all born in the year of 1990.

Anyways! A barbeque night was held at my place due to some last minute arrangement. After a patient waiting with marinated wings, tons of sausages, potatoes, garlic bread corns and tomatoes, the fire on the barbecue pit was finally roaring and it was time to barbecue.

The boys that burnt the first batch

One thing I learnt about barbecue is that you cook with the ambers of the coals and not the flame. This way you will get perfectly cooked meat and not the ones that are burnt heavily on the outside and raw in the inside.

Because the fire was flaming hot, I had to splash water on it to keep a low heat. On the wings went followed by potatoes, sausages, bacon and so on.

Guess who had to take over

                              See those nice red embers?

                                grilled potatoes and chicken

and guess whos eating them all up

When we were all digesting and chatting, out came the chocolate cream cake stuff with 19 candles. It was horrible with the boys singing happy birthday. It was monotone, slow, and lifeless. We had to sing 3 times to reach a happy level of the birthday song.

an all time favorite chocolate cake

                                       see what i mean?

just like an 8 year old boy

                                  happy birthday yao wei!

                                                   group pic!

                                   candid group pic shot

we decided to play weight lifting... lol...

                                                jyahhhhh!!!

and mighty yi lin does the same

The next day, yi lin was flying back to Thailand to resume her studies. Flying at a top speed with a Myvi, me and Sabrina reached just in time to snap some pictures with yi lin while seeing her entering the departure hall.

                                       sabrina .yi lin . me

                                             bye byeee!!!

hairy crabs!
Hairy crabs are hard to come by. unlike mud crabs, hairy crabs are seasonal. Lucky for me, I was given the opportunity to taste this.. "rare" crab with my parents in Toh Lee restaurant located inside of Nikko Hotel.

                                      Its crabbie time!

We were served a 6 course menu that began with deep-fried spring rolls, a hearty soup, -the main purpose of our visit- the hairy crab, a vegetable dish, fried rice and finally, lemon grass jelly with fortune cookies.

                                        Crispy popiah

hearty soup with vegetable and meat

Vegetables with garlic and more garlic

                                Chinese style fried rice

Lemongrass jelly with a touch of cream and strawberry

                                     Fortune cookies!

Since it was a restaurant in a hotel, service was plus+plus. Even our hot cooked crab was skillfully cracked open and served  at the most convenient way to consume.

                               nicely opened crab meat

look how they serve the crab legs

The texture of the hairy crab is certainly incomparable with the usual mud crab we have. Though the size of the crab is smaller, its flesh is creamier and tender. And the roe, wow, the roe.. It was too much for me. My parents were enjoying it but I was struggling. When I ate my share of the roe, it was so thick, sticky, and..  ugh just full of eggs!

The rest of the dish was just nice. Oh! And I enjoy cracking those fortune cookies. It's not so much of eating it but reading the quotes out of it was interesting.

term 5
Term 5 ended like a gush of wind.  So quick that soon  we will be graduating from Taylors in 3 months time. Term 5 was a little like hell. Though our time tables looked relaxed, they were definitely NOT!

First came our main concern, the Food Promotion followed by overflowing assignments and last but not least, our final term exam. All events flowed back to back, we didn't even have time to study properly because lecturers always go "okay! Assessment next week!"

Anyways these are a bit of term 5 pictures followed by food promo

tsk tsk, is this what you learn in class?

                                      FAM genting trip.

                           Not forgetting Prom Night

Last day of T5 ( commis night )

And Food Promo begins...

Vienna Operetta Orchestra

UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd and Toyota Motor Corporation proudly present Toyota Classics 2008, Vienna Operetta Orchestra.

                               Tickets, booklet and itinerary

Thanks to my wonderful handsome brother-in-law who was one of the hardworking elves in Toyota, he managed to get hold of the tickets with pretty good seats.

The orchestra was held at MBSA Auditorium, Shah Alam. Dresscode- formal (geez, like i don't get enough chance of wearing formal already) I was getting excited an all because this was my first time attending an orchestra, and its LIVE! Agitation and excitement were eating me alive when we left the house. It's an orchestra!! LIVE!! Lol

voila, the stage before the orchestra begins

People with formal attire filling up the seats

                                               Jean and i

my sister, my brother-in-law and their bodyguard.lol

So anyways, the auditorium was huge! I would estimate approximately 500- 600 people being present. However, as the lights dimmed, the crowd went silent. So silent that only the camera's shutter could be heard. And the orchestra began with the lead of their conductor.

waiting for the conductor to arrive

                          and the orchestra begins.......

this was the view from my seat, but it wasnt really THAT far

getting ready for the next piece

Well, the orchestra was good. I mean really good. Good. Words could not describe how fantastic it was. I was so amazed by such amazing musical pieces that could be produced with basic music instrument. (Makes me wanna learn one too!)  There were also a duet of a soprano and tenor along with 2 dancers. (such powerful voice the lady has..)

The soprano and tenor (with super super strong voice)

2 dancers were there to enhance the orchestra

thank you thank you, it was brilliant!

So while all Caucasians were showing off their skills and talent, the closing act was sung by Amy Mastura herself. With the background music of the orchestra, Amy sang 2 songs- Dingin Malam and Cinta.

                                Itinerary for the night

                                  Amy Mazura doing her thing

                                   Singing with full of emotion

A final bow and thank you to all guests

I had the best Saturday night ever! THIS! Is a night to remember.

Su Fen's next!
6 days after shannon, Su Fen turned 19! However, we've already started college and Su Fen's big day fell on our first practical service- long day, long night..

BUT! that didnt stop us from making it a blast! Before our theory class began, Lg, Joanne, Atika and i went to get a cake from secret recipe. We also managed to hide the cake away from her until class ended.

And the cake was revealed

                                       Happy birthday Su Fen!

Quick, blow it before the wind gets it

                                        Su Fen is wishing deeply
-if you noticed, shannon's wearing a nasty smile with a cake on his hand-

2nd surprise right to her face. looks like you got your wish su fen!

Su fen cuts the cake while 2 girls smiles at the camera

3rd surprise, a little shower before her night ends
-poser! least you can do is lend a hand-

Removing her phone, wallet.. etc etc

                                           1, 2 ,3 bye su fen!

okay, here's the funny part. I intend to "drown" su fen, in another words, drench her from head to toe. Maybe we had very bad teamwork lol, coz when we tossed Su Fen in the pond, she was STANDING on it. like this....

THAT! was UNEXPECTED

so i ran to the pond and splashed more water on her :D

Not wet enough? round 2 perhaps?

Also, on her birthday was our first day of college. Everyone eyed su fen when lecturer asked whos the class rep. Despite Su Fen insisting "i am NOT going to be the class rep. i had enough!"......

we didnt think she was serious ....

A quick shot before we all head back home

who's next to be thrown in the pond? we denifately need to work on our teamwork!

shannons birthday
"We're celebrating Jun Ren's belated birthday in A&W, make sure you come"

That was what I told Shannon without him knowing it was actually for him.

Well… we all love surprises don't we?

                                      Happy birthday Shannon!

No one among us will ever thought of a birthday celebration in a fast food outlet. When I proposed it everyone was shocked. Nevertheless, why is it always the fancy-mancy place? We don't need a grand place to celebrate one's birthday, it's the company that counts

A&W's attraction : their rootbeer and curly fries

So everyone was as usual.. Late! The only very punctual people were LG and Xiwern. After most of us arrived, we ate some chicken and drank root beer when Shannon finally came. We talked a bit more, waiting for seng kwee to come but due to some miscommunication, plans were changed.

Lg suddenly lured Shannon outside to look at something while su fen, xiwern and I ran to the dessert counter and ordered a double portion of waffles with ice cream. When they came back, we were still at the counter. Su Fen was still squeezing her home-brought chocolate sauce all over the waffle as I light the candle.

We walked back, carrying the waffles while singing the happy birthday song. Jun Ren was just next to Shannon so I guess HE still didn't suspect anything, until the song went " happy birthday to you, happy birthdayy to SHANNON……." he was surprised :D (yay!)

we couldnt chuck all 19 candles, it will look damn weird

                                c'mon! blow the candles alreadyy

Look at the pile of ice cream and chocolate sauce

                            An interesting/disturbing/funny birthday gift

Group pic! seng kwee's blocked by sean

So really, it doesn't matter much on where you celebrate your birthday (dont so kiasu go mamak-la), its the people you celebrate with matters a lot more

Steamboat at Summers
The best way to enjoy steamboat is to eat with a group of friends. We wanted to eat at Yuen’s but apparently they were always pack! Those who were familiar with that place begin talking about the chicken and kiasu people using plates to scoop them.

Luckily for us, there were still a couple of other steamboat restaurants around, we went to the one opposite Yuen. It was called Summer bbq & steamboat.

a quick snap before we go upstairS

                                       why summer....?

that's right, non stop! eat all you want guys!

A huge variety of “steamboat stuff” were waiting for us at a corner. Without hesitation we stacked out plates with fish balls, tofu, vegetables with stuffing, more balls and some seafood.

The pot was had a partition in between, so we had a choice of the normal stock or tom yam soup.

                                                   Let's eat!!

It does look pretty good doesn't it

ahh.... the sweet taste from mushrooms, fu zhuk and fishballs

chared prawn mantis, we all had difficulty eating it

The boys invention - ice lemon tea + orange juice

                                              we're all green!

                                           Ice cream for dessert

Overall, I think this place is not bad. The food’s quite good, service was up to standard though the place looked bit cheapy. but! it didn’t bother me much. try it out if you cant wait in line at Yuens!

bang!
Multiple gun shots started firing away once the marshal's hand swung down. My teammates and the opponents immediately scrambled for cover. The 'dead' proceed to a safety corner while everyone else waits for their next shot. Once clear, another round of gun shots fired away. This was like a war during the ancient times, but this, this is paint ball!

                                                    bang bang!

I once played laser wars, its exactly like being in a team and shooting your opponents and all but this only involves lights, vibration, laser and sound. (instead of all those paint ball gears!) It was fun, sweat-free and pain-free! :D So anyway, this was my first time playing paint ball, though I heard a lot of rumors of it being extremely expensive and painful when shot. Those were darn right true!

                              opponents are hiding very well...

"oh you mean i was suppose to move forward?"

                                                     Bring it on!

i got hit twice! one was on my arm, another on my pinky. The bruise on my arm swollen and turned blue black after some time. it was damn pain!

Basic baking class
Chef karam, our respected pastry chef has again completed teaching a 10 week basic baking class. Today was the graduation of his class and I was there to lend a helping hand. On this happy occasion, there will be a small feast  after the official graduation and  students are required to bake “something”.

At 10.30am, a few of chef karam little elves were already present, baking additional brownies and cheesecakes ( chuckled chef karam “in case the students’ cakes go wrong, there’s always a spare”) .  When the clock struck 11am, students started coming in and got busy instantly. We were there to assist them like, getting the ingredients or stirring their batter while they are busy with something else etc.

                                          Chef Karam in action

curry puffs with puff pastry (before)

(after) they do look like pillows dont they

                                   Little quiche tartlets

                     the spare brownies and cheesecake

The pastry class was filled with sugary aromas. Everyone was working on desserts. Though it was a long day, most of us didn’t felt it because we were constantly on the move. By evening, a variety of the wonderful pastries were done.

Students swarming in, mise en place

                                    Student masking the cake

Student in action (looks damn sinful)

The students accomplishments

                     top coated chocolate choux pastry

                                apple crumble tartlets

                                      variety fruit tartlets

                          Top coated raspberrie Cheesecake

layers of layers of chocolate on this brownie

cookies! goes perfectly with fresh milk!

                       and the graduation begins....

gone! all desserts were gone almost instantly!

you know why? because the people there tar pau crazy! especially this guy, he keeps taking the curry puffs again and again. when he left he had about 6 boxes with him. AND his OWN tupperware! i didnt even get to eat it during the feast..! greedy ass!

3 course meal
My sister had her friends over for dinner and being the person who likes to cook, i had to prepare a 3 course meal for the night. It wasnt eay to match all three starter, main and dessert. You woudnt want it too heavy or too light, a balance meal is very important especially a wine pairing involve.

anyways, i manage to somehow, combine 3 dishes which i thought ... was okayy! For starter i served baked asparagus rolled with bread and potato salad. Main course was a light tomato base spaghetti (i remember it from term1's kitchen class!!) followed by dessert, avocado ice cream and chococolate cake.

Im very proud to say that everything was home made! the spaghetti sauce, the avodaco ice cream and the chocolate cake. It wasnt very hard to cook all these though, as long as you have a reliable cooking book, good ingredients and proper utensils, a simple yet scrumptious meal can be whipped out in minutes!

And the mise en place begins...

                          ingredients, seasoning, equipment.... check!

                                              Boiling the potatoes

                               Blanching tomatoes. 16 of them!

White mushrooms are best eaten raw with some salt & pepper

My slumber sister measuring the ingredients

Voila, and the course begins..

Baked bread asparagus roll with chilled potato salad

                                 Light tomato spaghetti with herbs

Avocado ice cream along with Chocolate cake

Unfortunately we ran out of white wine so we paired the meal with a merlot 2005 from Chile. The wine was medium bodied and very dry. Most of those who drank it turned red instantly!

                                                       Cheers!

                                                 Guests of the night

It was tiring cooking all day long but it was fun and worth it! Anyone for a 3 course meal? i dont charge labour! lol
